Garden design is a constant change that evolves over time. The purchase of plants and other decorative elements are often spread out over the years to ease the burden of work and budget concerns, but the ever changing garden represent much more than a way to display money. Over the years, many gardens develop a sort of theme according to the personality and taste of the home owner. Often times, people choose to express their spirituality through working in the garden which gives the whole concept a more spiritual significance, of which religious garden statues expertise in. When people choose to display religious art, however, it does not necessarily always mean that they belong to that particular religion. Some people merely find beauty in specific religious art while others seek inspiration or comfort by being reminded of the values represented in said art.

Religious art and imagery have been used for garden and outdoor landscape purposes for many years. It sets the tone and creates a feeling of peace and tranquility. Religious garden statues make an excellent focal point in the back or front yard and the presence of such divine figures such as St. Francis of Assisi, Buddha, The Virgin May, or an angel can remind us of peace and our better qualities. These statues also serve to remind people of the purity of nature, and in some cases encourage others to pursue a similar path through life. The place that holds a statue of such religious figures suggests that the garden is a special area dedicated to peace and goodness represented by said figure.

Statues of Buddha have become increasingly popular and more widely available than before. Having these particular religious garden statues placed in the home or garden shows that the inhabitants hope for peace and tranquility and not necessarily the home owner’s adherence to that particular religion. The displaying of Buddha statues or figures remind people of their spiritual potential, of an inner quest to find harmony and balance, and to live a life based on moral values. These beautiful statues that stand upright in a garden full of life and nature uplift and mind and spirit and lend the home and garden the feeling of sanctuary, where one can meditate and find peace. Traditionally, Buddha statues should be placed in a high, uncluttered and clean place. It should not be set in a spot beneath the soles of the feat such as at a table or the bottom of the bed. It’s also important to not place the statue where it would face inappropriate items or activities.

Religious garden statues of St. Francis of Assisi are also very common, probably because he is the patron saint of animals and ecological movement. His love of nature and appreciation for God’s creation makes his message a popular one to adhere to and include in a garden. Other statues that make references to Christian figures and the Christian religion include those of Jesus and the Blessed Mother of God. The reasons for keeping Christian statues in the garden is similar to why other people turn to Buddha statues; to remind us of certain moral values and spirituality as well as to provide a protective haven for a peace of mind.
