A garden is a beautiful thing. They are often considered a place of tranquility and are usually a great source of pride for those that tend to them. In fact, many people spend a great deal of time and money creating their ideal garden setting, whether it’s a simple flower garden or something a bit more spectacular. But regardless of the size or scope, many gardeners feel that an outdoor garden statue can be the proverbial “cherry on top the sundae” when it comes to landscape décor.
Landscaping, gardening, and statuary have a long, rich history together. Nearly every culture throughout our planet’s history has produced its own unique version of garden art, dating as far back as ancient Egypt, and perhaps even earlier. The focus of art in many of these early cultures was primarily centered on depictions of figures from the local religious customs, mythological beings, as well as depictions of great kings and their accomplishments. Green and Roman cultures, while often focused the religious, were much more realistic in their depictions, with sculptors concentrating on emulating the human form as closely as possible. Many of these classics are reproduced en masse today, as they are very popular additions to many modern garden areas.
The world of the outdoor garden statue, in the modern world, is very diverse. While a great many people enjoy the unique beauty of classic art from the ancient world, there are dozens of other styles that are just as popular. Abstract sculpture has been quickly gaining ground as one of the most commonly used types of garden art in many parts of the world. The obtuse nature of abstract art leaves a lot up to the imagination of the person viewing it. This gives it the unique ability to mean something different to each and every person that sees it, without having to rely on a specific subject matter. Abstract art can also lend itself well to those that aren’t necessarily “artistic” in that it can be created by anyone and doesn’t have to resemble anything in particular.
Whimsy is also a popular category when it comes to garden art, and can include a wide variety of subjects and characters. The “garden gnome” is one of the most popular examples of whimsical garden statuary, having been first introduced during the 19th century in Germany. Other common examples often include characters from a much-loved movie, cartoons, as well as stories from childhood. Many home and garden centers carry a wide variety of such statues and artwork, and they are also widely available through online sources.
Of course, religion is always a popular subject when it comes to the outdoor garden statue. Religious icons from every major theology on Earth can be found in garden art form. From Christian saints to images of the Buddha, many people find these statues to be an exceptional way to bring a sense of peace and serenity to their backyard paradise. Of all of the various types of garden art, these pieces are undoubtedly among the most easy to find.
