For many people, a garden is something that should be a place of serenity and peace. The combination of beautiful flora, the smell of flowers, and warm summertime air can be quite relaxing and many people enjoy spending an afternoon surrounded by such tranquility. And one of the most common types of garden sculptures for those that are trying to invoke a sense of placidity is the Buddha garden statue. These statues are available nearly everywhere and come in many different sizes.
The Buddha is central to the Buddhist way of life. It is the representation of Siddhartha Gautama, who is credited as the founder of this system of belief and is often referred too as “the enlightened one”. Believed to have been born during the 5th century B.C.E into a wealthy family, he eventually began to realize that happiness did not come from money or power. After many years of searching and meditation, at age 35 he achieved “enlightenment” and spent his remaining years traveling and teaching the principles of finding the “middle path” in order to reach Nirvana. Today, there are over 300 million people around the world that consider themselves to be Buddhists, and millions more that follow at least some of the Buddha’s teachings.
A Buddha garden statue is often purchased because it is a reminder of the principles of peace and serenity that are the goal of the Buddhist lifestyle. Principles such as the elimination of want and the pursuit of mindfulness are Buddhist ideals that, for many people, are the key to a long, happy life. In some gardens, these statues are placed in a position of prominence, sometimes becoming the focal point of the garden itself. In other gardens they are placed in less conspicuous places and are aren’t intended to attract as much attention. However, regardless of their place among the other features of the garden, they are always a welcome site to visiting family and friends.
These statues have become very popular in recent years, even with those that do not consider themselves to be Buddhists. Many home and garden centers across the country have begun to carry them among their inventory of garden statues and sculptures. They are usually available in a wide variety of styles, sizes, and designs, thereby ensuring there is something for any situation. But while there are many variations on the Buddha statue, the most commonly seen in the garden is of the Buddha seated in the Lotus position. The peaceful facial expression and body language that are common to this particular variation are the most powerful reminders of what this life philosophy is all about.
Whether you follow the teachings if Buddhism or not, a Buddha garden statue can be a great addition to one’s garden. They are relatively inexpensive (although there are many exceptions to that rule) and can be purchased through local retailers or through online sources. They are renown for their abilities to invoke a sense of tranquility and peace, and have become one of the most common garden decorations in the world.
